To each person there is a different "true purpose of media" and even if the idea of slop is well understood consensus over what constitutes purposeless media will always be difficult if not impossible.

I love that Buffy can just switch back and forth between recognizing the absurdity of its setting and just indulging in the metaphor. It makes it enjoyable in a way more grounded and tonally consistent shows never really manage, at least for me.

Frieren feels like a story that people are so in love with that it has rendered them unable to meaningfully unpack any of what it is doing. As a person who read the manga ages ago and immediately disliked it, this whole thing has been deeply confusing to me.
