Arctic sea ice reached its lowest monthly extent for January, at 6% below average. Antarctic sea ice extent was 5% below average and thus relatively close to average compared to other recent years.

#Antarctic sea ice has been declining unusually fast for the last week or so. Some of this is due to lower concentration ice melting out from last month.
