In the case of a real drive recovery company, as long as the deletion was recent, they can get the data back. When you delete a file, nothing actually changes on the drive. There's a little table that says where data is.. and it just erases the note for that file. There's tools that can get it back-

ZFS. I have a NAS here using it, the OS scans the drives daily for degradation, uses checksums all over the place. It knows when a problem arises and can correct it or alert about it.

If you still have that hard drive, there are companies that can retrieve the data. It's a few hundred bucks, but they'll just take the platters out, put them in a new device, and use some modded firmware to image the drive to a clean one.

The middle-ground approach is to use stuff like-

If you want to go full on paranoid, get a tape drive or an archival-disk drive. There's formats designed to last 100 years.

Also: don't trust a hard drive. Data rot is real.

If you just leave a regular HDD on or even store it, it can and will corrupt and lose data just from entropy.
