On the 17th July 2004 Assistant played The Spice of Life - our 2nd time supporting the ace Girlinky. We played 3 songs for the first time, including What It Means. Why not enjoy this newly uncovered video? Admire our shiny optimistic faces, our jangling guitars/nerves

Spent the bank holiday re-reading issue 2 of the splendid @assistant.bandcamp.com fanzine In The April Sun accompanied by a very fine soundtrack from @goodbyewudaokou.bsky.social @lovejoy-official.bsky.social @glenndonaldson.bsky.social & a cast of indiepop legends. 🎶🎶

Just realised that someone I really like on this platform has deactivated. Hope they’ll be back.

My first time! I love it.

Currently listening to this splendid show, streaming on Mad Wasp Radio. Highly recommend tuning in; already played The Fall & Julian Cope, and it's therefore beyond reproach.

This is great! Like an unhinged Half Man Half Biscuit rant! Another one I've never heard before.

And followed by Julian! Woohoo

Sent off the first batch of Alas, So Long CDs and had to add something suitably historical in with them.

We've still some in stock if you fancy our CD of music inspired the 19th century & a letter inspired by the 18th Century!

I think it was 2009 actually - so it was the second time I saw them, in fact. Had seen a more conventional show at the Roundhouse in ‘07 - they did Daydream Nation then most of Rather Ripped with Mark Ibold & Chris Corsano.

Lovely slashy guitar sound, that!

I know Handsworth well. I love it. The Soho Road is one of the most vibrant streets in the world. I was attached to the library there for a writing project last year and I wrote a whole chunk about it in my book Hope And Glory. Read it if you get a chance

My first, ridiculously, was in New York. I was there for work & I passed a gallery one evening in probably the West Village, I think, & I looked through the window & literally saw Kim & Thurston setting up inside. I crept in and watched them do a noise thing!! Very serendipitous!

Thanks a lot, Nick! We were very happy that Helen was happy to be involved.

My fave Assistant song is probably this one: Jil Is Fading; in which I tried to find a warm melancholy in a pretty sad situation. Helen McCookerybook's backing vocals & melodica give me such joy. And actually Jil is still around, in a nursing home, & doing OK.

Hey; my zine is coming together! Lots of interviews & reviews. However, specific shoutout: if anyone would like to write something original let me know! Too much of my own writing in this issue. Will happily look at submissions about your band, other music, art, books, clothes, films, travel. Shout!

Our son is going to be a “focus child” at school tomorrow so going through all our boxes of stuff to find paraphernalia for him to take in.

Found the original lyric-jottings that led to Assistant’s should-have-been-a-hit classic Count Up Yr Heart.

I’m totally hooked on these three preview tracks for the new Telephone Numbers record. Such sweet affecting melodies, and those chiming guitars. Looking forward to the rest:

The Telephone Numbers' "Scarecrow II" takes in influences as disparate as late Replacements reflection to Byrdsian jangle to Go Betweens-esque pop elegance, all wrapped around lovely, literate tunes. In stores Oct 10th and direct pre-orders start shipping today!

This is an excellent beer! A Vienna lager so it is quite malty and creamy and fizzy and agreeably reddish. Much joy

After many months working on this with @spenwoodbooks.bsky.social and @billybragg.bsky.social himself the books have arrived...

It's bloody huge and looks amazing... as a fan since the age of 14 to be able to be an integral part of making this happen still is mind-blowing...
