Sentenced to death on 1 October by the court in Nabeul, Saber Ben Chouchane, who had been detained since January 2024 for Facebook posts hostile to President Kaïs Saïed, was released earlier this week, although the circumstances surrounding this decision and the legal proceedings are not yet known.

Condamné à mort le 1er octobre, Saber Ben Chouchane, détenu depuis janvier 2024 pour des publications Facebook hostiles au président Kaïs Saïed, a été relâché en début de semaine, sans que les circonstances de cette décision ni les procédures légales ne soient connues pour le moment.

His story is one of a struggle that has the power to change public opinion on the death penalty.

Pannir et sa famille se battent depuis des années pour obtenir justice et faire valoir le droit à la vie. Une fois de plus, ECPM se joint à la campagne de solidarité pour sauver Pannir. Une veillée aura lieu demain à la Haute Commission de Singapour à Kuala Lumpur, de 19h à 20h (heure locale).

Après le rejet de son dernier recours par la Cour d'appel le 5 septembre et le rejet de sa demande de grâce par le président, son exécution est désormais prévue pour le mercredi 8 octobre, pour la troisième fois.

Son exécution programmée deux fois par le passé, Pannir a pu y échapper obtenant à chaque fois un sursis de dernière minute, ce qui constitue une forme de torture psychologique.

Pannir and his family have been fighting for justice and the right to life for years. Once again, ECPM joins the solidarity campaign to save Pannir. A candlelight vigil will be held tomorrow evening at the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur from 7–8 pm (local time).

Following the Court of Appeal’s rejection of his latest appeal on 5 September and the President’s rejection of his clemency request, his execution has now been scheduled for Wednesday, 8 October, for the third time.

Pannir Selvam Pranthaman is a Malaysian national, musician and a poet who has been on death row since his arrest for drug trafficking in 2017. He has faced two execution dates, obtaining a last-minute reprieve each time — a form of psychological torture.
