Yes, terrible, and also far from justified in this case! The reviewer continued in the same vein, and in the end the ranting almost became funny—so the PhD could laugh and (hopefully soon) move on.

What makes reviewers use such a harsh tone? Do they have no regard for the feelings and hard work of the author(s)? Constructive feedback is always welcome, but not such destructive formulations.

Review just received by a fresh PhD ☹️: "This could have had potential if it weren't for the poor design, weak theoretical framing, inadequate literature review, unsound statistical testing, and superficial analysis. I recommend rejection, esp. since it isn't very original or insightful."
