Japan holds more U.S. debt than China - over $1 triliion for the former vs $759 billion for the latter. But in all, foreign investors only hold about a third of U.S. debt. Two-thirds is held domestically.

The U.S. is actually the second largest manufacturer in the world after China. But, like many other industries, we produce more with much less labor than in previous generations. Manufacturing *employment* has been decreasing since the 1970s, even as output has nearly doubled.
