If my inner life is a complicated version of what happens inside a spider, what happens when I squish the spider? Worse, what happens to me when a truck squishes me?

Maybe our fear of death—of eternal nothingness—fuels the urge to elevate the human mind and denigrate the others.

In the 80s Carl Sagan would’ve gone on the evening news to explain that, while it’s fun to imagine aliens, the real science is just as wondrous — that 3I/ATLAS tells us something profound about our place in the cosmos.
