A good friend of mine, who has since passed on to the next plane, once told me “Americans can’t be trusted with freedom.”
I argued with optimistic naivety. If he was here he would smugly say “I told you so.”
I wish he was here to tell me that, and I wish that he was wrong. But he wasn’t.
