In Lapaivka village, Lviv region, tragedy struck today.
As a result of an enemy strike, 2 people were killed. 2 others were injured and are now in our hospital.

A 46-year-old man sustained severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. His condition is critical.

Yes, the large amplitude in the north-south variation is also visible for southern observers, with the difference that the moon rises high this week and will be low over the (northern) horizon around Oct 12. However, this is more noticeable for high northern/southern latitudes (I'm at +53 deg ).

This year, the moon was sometimes seen culminating very low over the southern horizon. The reason is the current so-called "major lunar standstill". This happens once in 18.6 years when the tilt of the lunar orbit and the tilt of the ecliptic with respect to the equator are co-aligned. 🔭

Wondering where the moon is tonight? In #Potsdam, the 6-day-old moon was hanging very low in the sky as it culminated in the south just before sunset. With -29 degrees, its declination is as low as allowed by the 5.15-degree tilt of its orbit with respect to Earth's orbit around the sun.

The 2 images were taken on the evenings of September 20th and September 23rd 2025.
In 1846, Galle and his assistant Heinrich Luis d'Arrest observed Neptune again on September 24th and noticed it had changed its position. This confirmed that they had found a new planet.
