Definitely could cook this as a loaf - I'd put foil over it for a while so it doesn't dry out . If you are not vegan then add an egg.

It's a very old school recipe from about 1982! I use tinned beans, vacuum chestnuts & fresh herbs
ADUKI BEAN AND CHESTNUT LOAF The flaky pastry crust in this recipe surrounds a mixture full of rich flavours and colours. Although aduki beans, chestnuts and red peppers are all sweet, the Tabasco and wine vinegar add a balancing tang. Pulses are useful for roasts and bakes as they have a good floury texture and provide a substantial base. However, the earthy flavour needs to be made more interesting with vegetables either cooked well or puréed, and SERVES 4 6oz (175g) dried aduki beans, soaked overnight 4oz (110g) dried chestnuts, soaked for 1 hour 2 large red peppers 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 cloves garlic 2 teaspoons wine vinegar 2 tablespoons tomato purée 2 teaspoons dried oregano 4oz (110g) fresh wholewheat breadcrumbs 1/2-1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce 4 tablespoons shoyu 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar salt and pepper flaky pastry, made with 7oz (200g) wholewheat flour (page 142) 1 egg, beaten Drain the beans and rinse well. Put in a pan with plenty of fresh water. Bring to the boil and boil fiercely for 10 minutes, then simmer for 35-40 minutes or until tender. Drain the beans and mash. Meanwhile, cook the chestnuts in their soaking liquid for 50-60 minutes or until tender. Drain and grind the chestnuts in a blender or food processor. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 5, 375°F (190°C). Bake the peppers for 20-25 minutes or until the skins are charred. Cool and skin the peppers. Finely dice the flesh. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the peppers and garlic over a very gentle heat, covered, for 15 minutes. Add the vinegar, tomato purée and oregano, then mix in the aduki beans and chestnuts. Add the breadcrumbs, Tabasco, shoyu and red wine vinegar. Stir well, then season to taste. The mixture should be moist but not sloppy. Increase the oven temperature to Gas Mark 7, 425°F (220°C). Roll out the pastry to a large oblong and place the filling along one side. Fold the remaining pastry over the filling and seal well with a few drops of water. Trim off any extra pieces and use to decorate the loaf. Place the loaf on a baking sheet and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to Gas Mark 5, 375°F (190°C) and cook for a further 30-40 minutes. Serve hot with a tomato sauce.
