The custom of ‘walking the goat,’ as the festive performances are also called, is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditional lifestyle, which has circulated for more than a thousand years.

See, over there, that’s him, shivering without birds.” The weasel said, “ First you need to conjure a storm to swirl around the Windigo, to confuse it.” The porcupines conjured together. A great storm started up. When the Windigo arrived to eat Askik it got swirled. The porcupine storm confused the Windigo. It howled out … its mouth opened. With that, the weasel climbed into the Windigo’s throat toward its ice heart. Then the weasel chewed the Windigo’s heart! Inside the Windigo the weasel chewed. Soon the Windigo was dead. When the weasel crawled out, Askik quickly built a fire to thaw the weasel’s chattering teeth. The fire was also used to melt the Windigo’s heart. Everyone was still shivering. Porcupines and the weasel and Askik, some from fear and some from chewing ice. High ridges surround both, and access to the basin known as the Sanctuary is very difficult, through complicated glaciers. The other mountains of this region that bear the name Nanda include 6,611m Nanda Khat (which according to Carter means “the bed of the goddess Nanda”); 6,861m Nanda Kot, ”the fortress of the goddess Nanda”, located just outside the ring of peaks that enclose the Nanda Devi Sanctuary; and 6,309m Nanda Ghunti, “the headdress of the goddess.” Other peaks also belong to the kingdom of Nanda, and ”serve her.”

Many CISA employees are frustrated with their leaders and unsure how to proceed in their jobs, while their industry and government partners are concerned about working relationships with CISA that have deteriorated amid travel restrictions and staff turnover.
