3/1/44: the world’s first helicopter medical mission. Lt Cdr Frank Erickson of the US Coastguard transported blood plasma in his Sikorsky HNS-1 to Sandy Hook hospital from Manhattan during a winter storm. It helped save injured survivors from the destroyer USS Turner, which had exploded and sunk.

She sank in Lower New York Harbour following a series of internal explosions, possibly due to accidental detonation of ‘Mousetrap’ anti-submarine mortar bombs. 15 officers and 123 men were killed and 100 more of her 165 surviving crew wounded, many seriously. It’s a measure of the violence of Turner’s demise that all those who died aboard remain officially classed as ‘missing’, despite the wreckage of the ship later being salvaged. 📷 history.navy.mil 80-G-44230
