So grateful for the work of @uwcsde.bsky.social affiliate Kyle Crowder (@popassocamerica.bsky.social vice president) in organizing the #PAA2025 conference. I am proud to have served on the organizing committee.

USAID is an incredible brand and source of soft power. Killing it off would be a disaster for US foreign policy and for millions of the world’s poorest people.

The Census Scientific Advisory Committee, which advises the Census Bureau on research and methodology across various Census programs and activities, has been terminated as of 2/28/25.

This is another blow against federal data collection.

Surreal read of the day: a paper using USAID-funded and now terminated Demographic & Health Surveys to count the huge number of lives saved by the now frozen US PEPFAR program to fight HIV, co-authored by current US admin’s nominee to lead cuts in health research

Such a travesty that the Demographic and Health Survey program was terminated this week.

I realize the Gates Foundation can't pick up all the pieces, but this one seems like a natural one for them to pick up given that the DHS is the go-to data source for many of their focus areas.

The Demographic and Health Surveys, a major effort supported by USAID and widely used across the world, are also not currently available.

Really enjoyed meeting with @vluck89.bsky.social and learning more about his book. One highlight was learning that some of his research was powered by @ipums.bsky.social !

I am thinking of using @datawrapper.de in future versions of the class. Would someone at Datawrapper be able to give a short presentation on what it is?

When I was at UMN, I had the fabulous @cjsinner.bsky.social of MN @startribune.com present. The students loved it. Are there similar folks at @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social?

The best Christmas present I received as kid was GeoSafari. I loved it so much. I would love to get my kids one but can't find something similar. Did anyone else play with this in the 90s? In addition to being fun, I swear it helped me get the best social studies grade in middle school.

Hi Sam- Could you send me your email address? You would be a good fit to chair the second session.
