Remember folks though, if you criticise the elite, that makes you a mean "populist" and in today's understanding, that makes the equivalent of Trump, Farage etc

Seriously though, as much as I want to move on, I keep being brought back to populist hype as a key factor in the resurgence of fascism

@k8ebrown.bsky.social and I have a chapter on "The media and the mainstreaming of the far right: reporting, enabling or countering?" in which we highlight the different frames through which mainstreaming takes place in the mainstream media

It's so refreshing finally seeing a party that is not scared to call the far right what it is

It's a very low bar I know but it matters greatly to create space for alternatives
January 27, 2026 at 6:09 PM
In news that will surprise no one from the most far right home secretary in an already very far right lot

It confirms that Reform is the party of the elite, but too much has been invested in "populism" and the "left behind" narratives to stop hyping them now

Another day in British politics...

What's left to say?
January 24, 2026 at 8:02 PM
I assume voters aged 18-34 in routine occupation will not count as working class or left behind in serious punditry

60+ men who own their house, have a pension etc will on the other hand

Remember, it's not about being working class, it's about looking/sounding like it to the symbolic elite
January 22, 2026 at 6:37 PM
This is key if we want to think of the "working class" and "the people" in a more political way

Having a "lower level of education" and being in "manual or routine occupation" in your 60s could well mean you own a house, have a good pension etc

Young people on the other hand...

Starmer might have betrayed everything his party stood for to appeal to people who will never like him (and hate everything his party is supposed to stand for) but at least he will always have Guardian editorial board to pretend there is something from his utterly appalling leadership to save

😌

As if you can take what Vance is saying in good faith...

I can't imagine Lammy believing it to be true so the aim can only be to placate Trump and serve his interests and propaganda
January 10, 2026 at 9:55 PM
What an incredible coward... What more facts does he need to know these actions are pure and simply unacceptable?

Whether it's against the far right and authoritarianism here or abroad, Starmer has demonstrated he will not stand for what's right...

Populist hype is a hell of a drug...
January 1, 2026 at 10:10 PM
Uh oh... Trump is going to be upset the US are finishing last again...

I expect the timezones will be changed next year
December 31, 2025 at 5:47 PM
"Twin populisms" 🤦🏻‍♂️

Not sure what's worse, Labour's anti-populism as only strategy or such takes being printed as a worthy story

Another one to file in hegemonic defeatism...

This article is great actually to demonstrate the framing choices made by journalists and editors

The survey highlights some bad news for sure as in the figures above, which point to the emboldening of the far-right minority

Yes, despite full mainstreaming, the vast majority remains more open
December 29, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Could this have anything to do with the two major parties and all the media hyping far-right narratives and "dining across the divide" increasingly unashamedly in the past couple of years?

No, it must be those grassroots "legitimate grievances" I keep hearing about...

A day later, the ad is back...
December 28, 2025 at 8:24 AM
By "populist", it's safe to say the FT is referring to the far right

This matters though because it helps conflate any alternative to the status quo, whether left or far right, and leaves only the status quo as a "reasonable" alternative, even if said status quo is increasingly far right...

Excellent example of the way our media landscape works against democracy:

Today, Le Monde runs a number of stories on the real, dire cost of AI

In the past few days, it prominently featured an infomercial (clearly labelled but looking like a normal article) on "AI being finally productive"
December 26, 2025 at 9:37 AM
The only coherent plan this government has is to mainstream far-right politics, no matter what

No principles, no care, no beliefs beyond hating the left and mistaking "the people" for a minority of racists emboldened by a wealthy elite...
December 21, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Fluffy wishes all those fighting against the reactionary tide a happy weekend 🐈‍⬛
December 20, 2025 at 10:22 AM
Incredible that populist hype continues to grip mainstream elite discourse so much

Here is Le Monde's editor centring populism as the key issue regarding the Rassemblement National

Some would say it's far right politics, racism or even fascism which are a concern but that's probably "polarising"
December 16, 2025 at 9:33 AM
Every single day is Keir-Starmer-saying-or-doing-something-reactionary day
December 10, 2025 at 3:32 PM
Between that truly ridiculous Hyde piece on the Greens and the Starmer and Frederiksen given space to go full reactionary, the Guardian is really outdoing itself today

And if you scroll down you even get the "Make Britain Great Again" ad

Sorry but my money goes to media that fights the far right
