Vampire Hunter D

Partway through the movie I heard Brittney Karbowski and realized we were watching the shitty Sentai dub and not the super cool 80s dub and restarted it.

The vampire hunter mostly spends his time aura farming but sometimes fights Dracula and doesn't want to get laid.

Starset - Silos

Another let down from a band I love.

I enjoy this slightly more than THE WHEEL but just like that one it's boring and weirdly edgy in a very silly way. Also using AI in the marketing and videos is incredibly disappointing. Starset should be the last band touching AI.

I SEE STARS - THE WHEEL

This long awaited follow up to their 2016 masterpiece Treehouse is sadly a huge let down. It's long and uneventful - shifting from their previous electronic rock sound to boring rave music.

At least D4MAGE DONE is good. I want to like this, but all I hear is noise.

Greyhaven - Keep It Quiet

First time checking these guys out and had my expectations blown out of the water. They are somehow making octane metal sound cool while still being heavy and experimenting with song structure.

Really enjoyed the old Three Days Grace vibes on some of the tracks.

Lisa Frankenstein

I wish I liked this as much as everyone else. The romance reminded me of a hurtful experience so it was odd to see it romanticized.

The over-the-top goofiness in the dialogue, visual design, and action keeps it entertaining for the runtime but it just didn't stick for me.

The Cabin in the Woods

Ridiculously fun and subverted expectations very well. I went into this blind and that's really the only way to do it. My friend wouldn't give me any straight answers on what to expect lol.

Gotta find out how to buy that bond mug.

One Battle After Another

After polarizing experiences with PTA I went into this unsure and pleasantly surprised that it was my favorite so far.

Everything about this is brilliant and the only thing keeping it from a perfect score is personal taste. Colonel Lockjaw is a legendary villain.

Inherent Vice

Next up for PTA films is an unfiltered 70s detective story with Joaquin Phoenix, which had potential for me but I unfortunately didn't vibe with the graphic use of drugs and sexuality that rarely served the plot.

There's talent in the production it just didn't interest me.

Magnolia

The execution of this film is nothing short of masterful and, as a good friend said - absolutely intoxicating to experience.

But at times it falls short of what it could have been despite the extended run time, which was definitely taking its toll as the final hour played out.

Tropic Thunder

Every time RDJ went into another long bit while standing still as Ben Stiller gets increasingly annoyed at his presence I laughed harder.

The plot didn't interest me but every actor is bringing their own charm and hilarity. And of course the blackface commentary is great.

I Prevail - Violent Nature

Generic riffs, uninteresting melodies, and on the nose lyricism.

Somehow losing their singer/rapper didn't make the music heavier - just made it boring. Brian was a creative voice of I Prevail and it doesn't seem like they really know who they are without him.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle

I show up to demon slayer to watch sick ass fight choreography while hype music plays and got what I came for.

Akaza backstory was heartfelt and added much needed depth to a character that was getting by with aura. Wish we knew more about the guy Zenitsu fought.

Baan (Gigguk Short Film)

It's a crazy day when your favorite anime youtuber makes an anime and it's ACTUALLY GOOD. Any criticism I can launch against it can easily be solved by making it longer - which just means we need Garnt to make more anime.

Let him write a P.A. Works original series.

HIM

I really liked the trailer, but the movie is just a long version of the trailer.

There's plenty of interesting ideas here but nothing really lands or goes anywhere. It's a mess that's saved only by vibes and an insane performance by Marlon Wayans.

Hamilton

One of those things I always knew I would love and I'm glad I caught in a theater. Every bit as fun as I imagined it to be and I enjoyed the ways it embellished history to tell a cool story. I want to watch it again so I can catch all the lyrical details

The Day The Earth Blew Up

Not all the humor here is for me but I don't think there's anything here that wasn't done well for what its trying to be.

Creativity is oozing out of this project and had me laughing hysterically at the sheer ridiculous of what I was seeing. Definitely surprised me.

Blood Simple

Really don't have a lot to say about this. I've been told it's a poor introduction to The Coen Brothers - although I did see O Brother Where Art Thou a long time ago.

It's a mediocre slow burn that never manages to excite me beyond a chuckle or an eyebrow raise.

Dance Gavin Dance - Pantheon

DGD is a band defined by change and evolution, and by god I think they've evolved into their final form. This album feels more like Dance Gavin Dance than ever!

Bangers front to back. It's groovy, screamy, silly, referential, and every single member is shining.

The Long Walk

One of the most harrowing, shocking, and poignant pieces of media I've ever seen. I signed up for people walking, talking, and dying - and got exactly what I asked for in the most phenomenal way.

Hunger Games has nothing on this level of character writing in just 100 minutes.

Inglourious Basterds

Not really my cup of tea, but as an introduction to Tarantino it definitely did not turn me off of the rest of his works.

Brilliantly tense and suspenseful. It's a difficult watch because you're always on guard for something to go wrong, but there's some silliness too.

EDEN - Dark

This isn't the most experimental or bombastic EDEN project - instead it is a perfectly crafted sound with excellent production that's smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. Loving the beeps and boops on this release and I can confirm it's for great washing dishes while high.

We Came As Romans - ALL IS BEAUTIFUL... BECAUSE WE'RE DOOMED

WCAR has truly become the next version of themselves after sadly losing Kyle so many years ago. Much better than Darkbloom - this album experiments while delivering the heaviness and rock anthems you'd expect from WCAR.

Ocean's Eleven

Legendary cast that are all nailing the clever, entertaining script. George Clooney's face acting really brings this to another level.

I just can't get behind Julia Roberts when her performance is so vapid the whole time.

Pissed I didn't watch this or The Goonies as a kid.

Tornado

Dripping in style but failed to grab my attention at any point. The narrative is weak, it has no focus, and meanders for most of the runtime. There's some cool action scenes towards the end that snapped me back awake.

Three Days Grace - Alienation

After EXPLOSIONS there was only up to go, but this still isn't it. Having Adam back in the band is great and their recent live tour was awesome but they still can't seem to escape putting out boring uninspired albums. Deathwish is the best track on the album.
