Hiked around the stunning geologic site Columns of the Giants, formed 15,000 years ago when a lava flow cooled and cracked. As pieces break off over the centuries, a talus slope has formed at the base, and these rocks shelter remnants of ice from the Little Ice Age.

A new jaguar has been spotted in Arizona! This is amazing news for a critically endangered species. It’s the fifth jaguar to be spotted over the last 15 years. With drought and threatened migratory corridors, it’s more important than ever to protect wildlife. #jaguars

Not only are the leaves of the aptly named silverberry shrub silver, but so are the berries! They provide an important winter food source for a variety of wildlife, including sharp-tailed grouse, songbirds, and moose.

One easy way to identify a Douglas fir tree is if it looks like mice are hiding under the cone scales, with their little tails sticking out. 😀

This is fairy puke, which I was delighted to spot while out hiking. That’s the common name for Icmadophila ericetorum lichen, aka “peppermint drop lichen” or “candy lichen.” But to most, especially those in British Columbia, it is known as “fairy puke.”
