Share widely. Contact your electeds. Get this legislation over the finish line.
It's time for the MA legislature to pass a Freedom to Read bill that protects librarians + educators from harassment; and protects authors, creators, booksellers, + publishers from economic harm due to censorship. I support An Act Regarding Free Expression (H.3594/S.2328).

AABB is proud to join this coalition of groups fighting for the freedom to read. Nothing gives us more hope than the understanding that while the fight may be daunting, we are not in it alone. 1/3
Standing together for the freedom to read.

All students, all people, deserve and require access to information.

Access to books is essential for the free exchange of ideas and for the protection of a healthy democracy.

Books hold a pivotal role in our culture—a role that must be projected.

During Banned Books Week, we recommit ourselves to fighting censorship and authoritarianism all year round.

Today, a well-coordinated network of politically motivated public officials, groups are attacking our fundamental freedoms—including our freedom to read.

Thousands of books that predominantly depict people of color and LBGTQ+ people and that discuss sex, gender, sexuality, race, and racism are banned in public schools and libraries across the country.

These attacks on school districts and public libraries, educators and librarians, authors and illustrators, and the publishers and booksellers that support them are stripping students, families, and all library patrons of their freedom to read and learn.

These efforts upend the lives of students, families, authors, illustrators, educators, and librarians. It leads to erasure from the shelves, harassment from would be censors, denial of access to books, job loss, and financial and emotional distress.

The hardest action to take is often the first one. So this #BannedBooksWeek don't worry about what you do as long as you DO SOMETHING. We'll win this together with millions of little actions building to big changes & millions of people working together & taking care of each other.
authorsabb.bsky.social
1 Person: Connect with someone. You could send a thank you note to a librarian, teacher, or favorite author. You could also connect with someone you know who isn't active in the fight yet. Get some coffee, talk about what you can do together & make a plan that includes how you support each other...
authorsabb.bsky.social
1 Organization: Donate to, volunteer for, sign up to get the newsletter of some organization defending the right to read. Your local library or school board count! Organized, collective action is always more effective than going it alone. And, honestly, a lot more fun!
authorsabb.bsky.social
1. Event: There are hundreds of events all over the country. Readings, read-ins, letter or postcard writing parties, book club panels, & more. A ton of events have already happened but there are plenty more all week so odds are pretty good you can find something...

Tonight Portland, OR, members of @authorsabb.bsky.social gathered together to write postcards to librarians and school board members as part of Banned Books Week . . . but every week is a good week to take action to protect the freedom to read.

A postcard that says "Authors Against Book Bans, authorsagainstbookbans.com" is held in front of the camera. In the background, an author who's against book bans is filling out postcards at a table full of postcards and writing supplies. The author is wearing a blue shirt with blurry white writing.

C'mon my wonderful nonfiction colleagues. Please join us at @authorsabb.bsky.social and stand up for the right of everyone to read.

You might say "oh, but I write about science/history/culture! I only write true verified things!"

...you think they're not coming for that?!
maggietokudahall.bsky.social
So far this fight has been on the backs of children's books creators, which makes sense. We were the canaries in the coal mine. But they're coming for romance. They've come for long form journalism. They're coming for lit fic and SFF and horror.

Because it's not about the books; it's about funding.

It's in the bylaws and everything! :)
