Anyway … I could be reading into it but it feels like Mel is more bluntly Autistic this season that the last which makes sense “in universe” and “out” …

In-Universe … Mel has been working at the Pitt for around 10 more months so she is more comfortable in tbe environment.

I am also reallly impressed with Taylor's ability to realisiticlaly commit to physically akwark interations.

I this this was my favorite Mel Moment of the episode ... Taylor Dearden really nails these lines and Isa Briones too!

Its's hard for me to verbalize how Mel is poorly playing down what is up in the second panel, the infodumping in the 4th, and the excitment in her voice in the sixth.

anyway ... when Mel is done having a delightfly though about Boba ... she just goes back to working on the leg.

This is a highly relatable experience for Autistic people to not realize when we are being flirted with. (in this case, its knid of like when Santos was talking about Unicorns earlier.)

Anyway ... this patent asks Mel if she drinks coffee and she respsone with a very passive "uh no I avoid caffeine" and then he asks her "what about Boba" and her whole face lights up saying "I love boba" and looks at him for the first time instead of the open leg wound.

I am pretty sure that the last Mel scene of the first epside of season 2 is a patient hitting on Mel, which Mel is not picking up ...

regardless this patient with a open leg injury is talking to Mel while sie is sewing up an open would on his leg and she interacts but is non emotive.
January 10, 2026 at 4:21 AM
I could be misreading this scene but I think Mel was unaware that Santos left until this moment of looking at were Santos was ... Maybe she was scripting ... but she looked where Santos was when she is told she is talking to herself.
January 10, 2026 at 4:09 AM
There is something that ... Is an extremely naunced aspect of Autism that I don't think could really be demonstrateed in a show other than the Pitt very well where Mel really doesn't pick up on how social cueas of when converation are actually starting or are over ... so she caries on when ...
January 10, 2026 at 4:03 AM
Note that Mel doesn't just present as Neurodiverent but also Unlike a lot of other characters in The Pitt (and other shows) Mel is explicility stated to be emotionally divergent by other characters and Mel herself.

"I am known to be a bit overly sensitive sometimes"
January 10, 2026 at 3:57 AM
Taylor does an excellent job with the style of Autistic emoting which is nearly flat affect most of the time and then extremely emotive when ... well .. emoting ...

Mel is generally happy with most of her emoted but in this scene we see Mel negativley emoting ... and its quite ... emphatic.
January 10, 2026 at 3:35 AM
There is a great scene where Dr. Santos is trying to get Mel to talk about what is clearly occuying Mel's mind and Mel keeps getting distracted by the tangental comments Santos is making ... like a reference to K-Pop and another reference to Unicorns. Eventually Santos has be be blunt.
January 10, 2026 at 3:26 AM
Momentarly not infodumping about Mel ...

The Pitt is an extremely inclusive show and one of the characters is presented with no sound, even the ASL interpreter fades away. I am assuming the character is Deaf, which is very cool for the continued inclusividy.
January 10, 2026 at 2:49 AM
Mel adapts to the non reciprocated hug with ... and an excited arm ... ... um ... shake ... its ... akward but not outside of what I assume the Pitt's staff have come to expect from Mel.
January 10, 2026 at 2:43 AM
Dr. Mel really likes Dr. Langdon (who has been gone for months) and as soon as she sees him she has an ... out of scope for the hospitals social norms reaction ... rushing up to him, "shouting" his name, and anticipating a hug ...

Taylor Dearden (the actor playing Mel King) is openly ADHDer and does an excellent job in the role of a Neurodiverent (Autistic) doctor.

In this scene you can clearly see that even in the out of focus background Taylor as Mel is consitantly stimming.

(note they have ASL interpreter for The Pitt)
January 10, 2026 at 2:31 AM
three doctors are asked if they have any questions and Mel doesn't respond because she doesn't have any questions but she fairly called out because she is ... obviously stimming and looking at her stethescome. She responds by saying "I didn't say anything" ... (tbf, she has something on her mind)
January 10, 2026 at 2:21 AM
Season 2 of The Pitt has started and and I am delighted that the show is continuing to showcase Dr. Mel King as authentically Autistic.

The first moment we see her this season she is quasi-distracted stimming with her stethescope (but she is aware of what is going on)

One of the first Autistic people studied 100 years ago to define Autism was face blind. Our communities significantly overlap.

With one of my face blind associates we meet in a predetermined place away from others so they can know who I am from a preponderance of context clues.
