the core issue is that i was recently made *acutely* aware of several friends who will not interact with anything i post unless i practically beg them to, and it has poisoned my ability to take the validation of *any* of my friends at face value

"why can't i just be happy with what i have" i say to myself, looking at the list of my friends who like my stuff and realizing that even that hasn't made me happy because it functions as an inverse list of friends who haven't seen it (or, worse, saw it and chose to pass it up)

to fix that i need to rethink how the level "pools" are organized, but i don't have any good ideas yet. right now the "level intro" pools add up to a quarter of the whole run, far from ideal!

biggest headache is going to be making something cohesive within the technical limitations i'm working with

another problem i'm facing is that the threemix marathon mode feels a little stale right now – i think this is because the first half of it feels like it always plays out more or less the same, and that's a huge flaw for something that i want people to replay many times

ideally with additive time i still want the player to feel some pressure from the clock, but every player has different skill levels and i don't want the clock to be *too much* pressure either. it's gonna be a difficult balancing act but i'm confident this is the right approach

one big change is that checkpoints now *add* time, rather than completely resetting the clock like in the main retrush campaign. currently it's tuned to give way too much time but i've got some ideas on how to fix that, like a hard cap of 90 "seconds" on the clock (2.5sec in SMB1 = 1sec real time)
