it's all safety. i think i can't emphasize this enough that if someone is correcting you on how they preferred to be referred to as, it's because they're making - not just an effort to present themselves in a way they're comfortable - but because they trust you enough to support them.

yes there's an off chance they'll correct themselves. but more often than not, it's either a blank stare of "why should i?", or people responding with aggressiveness "like oh you snowflake"/"get over it". obviously these are folk i never really want to stay involved with if i had the choice.
