Just heard on WSJ's What's News podcast: "Yeah, so, being a bank is just really hard these days". It's for gems of complete lack of self-awareness like this that we keep coming back to What's News

Question for #menasky or #polisky: if the U.N. Truce Supervision Organization still has its mandate to operate in Gaza, what would it take for it to return?

Israel Says It Will Destroy Hamas. But Who Will Govern Gaza?
Israel has set itself a stiff challenge in aiming to vanquish Hamas. But an even bigger question looms: Once in Gaza, how and when does Israel get out?

I'm not sure if I buy the argument that restrictions on the sale of semiconductors to China are encouraging them to build their own chip ecosystem. China has already been developing autarkic production capacities in a number of areas deemed critical

Some surprising claims from Mearsheimer:
-Lobbies don't influence foreign policy decision making (!)
-Rational Choice Theory isn't a theory
-NATO expansion was rational—and foolish
-NATO expansion didn't seek to contain Putin—but was a provocation
-Leaders don't use heuristics or analogies
On today's Lawfare Podcast, Jack Goldsmith spoke with John Mearsheimer and Sebastian Rosato about their new book, “How States Think." They discussed how their state rationality theory differs, why understanding state rationality is important, and more.
The Lawfare Podcast: How States Think
John Mearsheimer and Sebastian Rosato join to discuss their theory of state rationality.

Plenty of problems in this piece but i found this one really peculiar:

“Hardliners now hope that more advanced weaponry (ATACMS, F-16 aircraft, M-1 rifles, hordes of drones, etc.) will tip the balance in Ukraine’s favor”

Who is advocating to send “advanced” WW2-era M1 Garand rifles to Ukraine?!
The Morality of Ukraine’s War Is Very Murky
The ethical calculations are less clear than you might think.

Just heard Gilbert Achcar declare that the war in Ukraine has nothing to do with the defense of democracy vs authoritarianism because some members of NATO have a righ-wing government
📻 Weekend listening 📻 - Gilbert Achcar on his new book, 'The New Cold War: The US, Russia and China - from Kosovo to Ukraine', in which he argues that our perilous global situation is rooted in events and key decisions made during the 1990s:
