This week on Alloy we got a chance to revisit one of our fave imports from the darkest days of the Malaise era, when British Leyland thought the Rover SD1 would do well in 'murrica cause we liked big sedans with V8s. (The venture did not go as planned).

This week we have launched Alloy.
It will be very different from the modern car news & culture website experience.
Here's what it's all about & what we're gonna do with it: alloymag.com/welcome-to-a...

There’s a DAF museum & service center in southern VT just for you. I know the owner b/c my Volvo is a DAF of sorts. It’s such a pretty town too to visit, esp in the autumn. It’s a very neat museum too with some later Volvos.

Been thinking about The Most Painfully-2010s Movie Moments, & it's a close tie between Miller's planet with knee-deep water, & Littlefinger & Bane talking nonsense at low, room-level voice in a plane with a missing door.

I think Petyr Baelish & Bane might be numero uno in this contest.

Mr. T should be on Mount Rushmore?
I’m out of ideas.

Finally, a correctly-sized Costco truck.

Def worth a visit, even if a little out of the way for you, along the shoreline.

The 1990 version of this headline is "What if Your Burning Land Rover Could Eject Its Engine?"

Jabba’s son is in this too… which is a thing I never thought I’d ever type or say.

Plateless JDM Mitsubishi sitting for weeks by emissions testing place is totes chilling & has no problems, why do you ask?

Whenever I hear FLIR.

It’s in a remote town, but unforch not everyone there drives DAFs. I might be visiting it again this autumn.
Full story of this car tho just in case: www.autoweek.com/car-life/a19...

I’ve been in the only other 343 in the US years ago. It lives at the DAF museum in Vermont.
There is also a third 340 up there, red I think, but not running after a hard life as a winter car in Maine (yes, really).
This silver 343 DL tho belonged to a Swedish diplo at the Bay Area consulate.

I did see its Rover 400i cousin in Montreal a few times about 15 years ago. It was a common sight around downtown at the time.

Downtown Montreal produced some hall of fame finds for me in a very short period of time, tbh, just while visiting for a few days. Peugeot 306 was another.

Lawd, just noticed @thealso.bsky.social by this 1985 Volvo 340 DL at Carlisle in 2022 (not my pic, sourced from Flickr, taken by Paul B., I was not there that year).

Jim, is this your doing? Confess.

Seen on eBay. Ngl, kinda curious about these. Dried out & turned brittle no doubt, but still.

I still want a refund for having seen the second half of “Prometheus.” And punitive damages for the mental damage it did.

“OMG, it’s Sigmund Jähn!”

I think we are still at Verhoeven station, but the next stops are definitely Cuaron & then immediately Blomkamp.

If year 2000 me only knew that in 25 years I'd see the Audi Rosemeyer Concept scaled down, run thru a PS filter to get rid of all the curves, & given a correctional-facility interior...

Concept art for something I am working on for someone. (Oohh, mystery!)

Jeezus, just one of the most bleakest headlines & photos I've seen in this biz in years.

They're mostly gonna defend obscene energy usage to produce stuff like maps with West Wigina and Rhoder Land.
Tbh the corporate push to use AI is reaching absolutely insane levels & has to be coordinated on some higher level of govt decisionmaking.

Ordinary Volvo out for ordinary weekend drive.

Yup, immediately thought of Mediabreak segments. There’s one where ED-209 gets stuck in an open manhole cover and a tow truck tries to get it out. This is basically that, but irl.
