The AW Landscape Board held their latest meeting at Maralinga Village, and board members and staff met with Oak Valley Rangers to discuss the new Landscape Plan for 2026-31.
A tour of the nuclear test site was a powerful reminder of the importance of working together to protect Country and culture.

The new feral predator traps set on the Yalata coast by AW and Yalata Rangers are attracting some curious cats and foxes. To begin with the traps are wired open so the ferals have a chance to get used to them. A Mitchell’s hopping mouse also comes along for a look.

Scaly Sunday.
This spectacular dragon was spotted on a recent fauna survey. Central bearded dragons vary in colour from grey to shades of brown, orange and yellow, generally matching the colour of the soil where they live.

Friday flowers.
Enjoy some spring colour from the AW region – mulla mulla, swainsona, everlasting daisies and calandrinia. These beauties are all at risk from buffel grass, which can transform entire ecosystems. That’s why we advocate for a national strategy to battle buffel.

AW staff took a trip to the Yalata coast to check on the remote cameras monitoring the dunes for feral predators. We recently teamed up with Yalata Rangers to set up predator traps in the area, protecting the hooded plovers. These cameras show that foxes are active along the coast.

The NRM Regions Australia National Knowledge Conference was held in Cairns last week.
AW was represented by Brenz Saunders, Kim Krebs and Adam Wood. Brenz spoke on a panel discussing Indigenous leadership and Kim delivered a presentation on the need for a national strategy on buffel grass.

At only about 2.5 cm long and weighing less than a gram, bogong moths can migrate 1,000 km to Australia’s alpine region each spring! Help scientists track the bogong moths and learn how to protect them via @ZoosVictoria’s Moth Tracker.

Thursday Birdsday!
The spiny-cheeked honeyeater is widespread across Australia. As the name suggests, they eat nectar, but will also dine on small lizards, spiders, insects and fruit.

This curious dingo was spotted on a recent field trip, coming close to camp to watch everyone packing up. Dingoes are an important animal in our region, ecologically and culturally.

This beautiful delma was caught in our recent fauna survey at Immarna. While it may look like a snake, it’s actually a legless lizard.

Researchers say their new study shows that dingoes are a distinct species from domestic dogs, and they should be given a new scientific name.

Spring is here and the sun is shining, how’s the view from your desk?
Fieldwork can be tough, but it definitely has its advantages! Just another day in the office for the AW team.

Wildfires put tjakura at risk.
23 years of data has shown that fire has a major impact on the desert skinks. Tjakura nests are much more likely to be found where the spinifex has not burned for a long time.

Buffel is a wicked problem.
Procrastination is not the answer and will only lead to more division and more environmental damage. We need to treat buffel as a resource AND as a weed, depending on where it’s growing, says ecologist John Read.

Stuck on you.
Why do these vehicles in Canada have AW stickers on them?
AW’s Ecologist Brett Backhouse has been in Canada as part of a group of Australian firefighters helping battle blazes in remote forests in Alberta and spreading the word about AW while he’s at it.

AW staff are busy in the field, and behind the scenes there’s plenty going on, from scoping weather station sites and connecting kids with Country, to fighting foreign fires and farewells to old friends. Read all about it in Palya: https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au/aw/news-publications/palya

Seeing a wild predator running straight towards you can be terrifying. Luckily for AW’s Les Mundy, the two predators in this clip are sandhill dunnarts – only 40-50g. The third animal in this clip is a Mitchell’s hopping mouse, which also seemed to home in on Les.
