Great to see @physoc.bsky.social President @annieneuro.bsky.social in the BBC News article about this week's Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

"A striking example of how fundamental physiological research can have far-reaching implications for human health."

Scientists win Nobel Prize for groundbreaking immune system work
The prize-winning discovery explains how the immune system attacks hostile infections, but not the body's own cells.

If we’re serious about climate resilience, we have to start with human physiology.

Thanks to @rsc.org for the invitation.

So my call to action was clear:

🔥 Put health at the heart of climate policy
🧠 Use physiology to define limits & priorities for urgent mitigation
🛡️ Design adaptation around physiological resilience ie what our bodies can cope with
awmackenzie.bsky.social
Simple message:

Climate change harms people through their bodies.

Heat, air pollution & poor nutrition don’t act separately, they stack up in the heart, lungs & brain.

And that’s where physiology comes in.

Great to be in Belfast today to speak at Stormont about climate change & health on behalf of @physoc.bsky.social

Delighted to be in Belfast at Stormont today, and looking forward to speaking later about the role of physiology in tackling the health challenges from climate change.

👋 Goodbye Liverpool and #Lab25. Upbeat mood, galvanised despite the headlines. Science/R&D takeaways: prevention push, skills beyond degrees, uni funding worries, place everywhere, and AI centre stage. I’ve put more thoughts on LinkedIn… www.linkedin.com/posts/macken...

Well, here you go:

A good science policy trivia question. How many times did recent Prime Minister’s mention 'science' or 'research and development' in their party conference leader speeches?
awmackenzie.bsky.social
A few reflections on science & health so far at #Lab25:

- Optimism about UK life sciences, but challenges ahead
- Real energy around digital NHS ideas
- Prevention & neighbourhood health repeatedly framed as central to tackling inequalities
- Growing recognition that climate policy is health policy

A beautiful sunny evening in Liverpool for day one of #Lab25! (Very welcome since my suit is still wet from last year’s rain).
awmackenzie.bsky.social
Couldn’t get a seat on a direct train from London to Liverpool for #Lab25, so instead going the scenic route. Takes much longer but views from the window are better!

And then there were two! Isla is besotted with her newly arrived little sister.

…it could revolutionise physiology and healthcare. From monitoring brain activity with unprecedented precision to new ways of diagnosing disease, the impact on how we understand and protect health could be profound. (2/2)

Thanks to the @instituteofphysics.bsky.social and Parliamentary & Scientific Committee for a great evening in Parliament discussing the future of quantum technologies.

Particularly exciting for @physoc.bsky.social is that quantum isn’t just about physics labs… (1/2)

Beautiful day for a walk through London (which is lucky as due to the tube strike I didn’t have much choice).

New @who.int & @wmo-global.bsky.social report warns of rising workplace heat stress, affecting billions of workers. Protecting people means starting with physiology - understanding how the body responds to heat to design real solutions. @physoc.bsky.social is driving this physiology-first approach.

The Physiological Society welcomes new joint report published by @WHO and @WMO. It highlights the growing global health challenges posed by extreme heat on the workforce, providing a renewed focus for action and engagement on this issue.

As the heat #HealthAlert has been extended across large parts of the UK amid the current #heatwave, @awmackenzie.bsky.social explains why a ‘physiology-first’ approach could help protect people's health & wellbeing from extreme heat.

This summer, heatwaves have swept across the UK, Europe, North America, and Asia, shattering temperature records and putting millions at risk.

In response, we need strategies that start with the body, not just the forecast.
