Most people looked at it and saw ruin. Abandoned lives. Time passed by.

He looked at it and saw renewal. Old beams in new rooms. Weathered planks becoming a new table. Rusted fixtures brought back to life for another century.

History lives on, past is present - someone needs to care.

There were so many abandoned farmhouses. All standing in testament to a forgotten age. One where man lived by the seasons and the fruits of the land. Memorials left to rot and be reclaimed by nature again.

The forecast had been a mistake. They said barely any snow, but here we were with several inches on the ground and still going. It made a perfect day for watching the snow fall, but a horrible day for getting work done. Well, it's been a crazy week, so why not go full hygge!

This would be the place. They only had to harvest a few trees, and those would become the walls and roof and furniture of the hut. Minimal intrusion on the Wood. Their new Witch would have her home.

She'd have to enchant her own chicken feet, though. Their last try did not go well.

It was a lot of stairs. And a huge sack. Normally he'd just pop off the sleigh with a few gifts, drop off under the trees, and hop back on. But with the city so built up with hi-rise apartment blocks, he had to use the garage and carry everything upstairs.

Good thing he didn't skip leg day.

You can't just pretend to be Nice. He knows of course. He doesn't judge, mind you, he'll just nudge you on the right path with a twinkle in his eye, and you'll have all the feels for disappointing him. You have a chance, though, he checks his list twice!

Santa's coming to town.

He couldn't deny he'd made a mistake. He was invited to perform in the pantomime and figured he'd be dressed up as a dame, or maybe part of a horse. When he realized it was a vampire's pantomime and he was playing the punchbowl, he got nervous. Christmas bites have a new meaning.

This didn't work out the way I planned, she thought. She had put the presents under the tree, ate a cookie, drank the eggnog (well, she hit the sidebar first, 'natch). Then she heard the kids running footsteps. Shit, she had to get out of sight. That left the window. Holly was not jolly.

The village slumbered under a cover of snow, the children asleep in their beds. Sugarplums danced, reindeer pranced, and lovers romanced, enjoying the crackle of the fireplace flames. Gingerbread baking, eggnog in the making, there was no faking the holiday spirit. Winter wonderland.

And to get your partner that thing she really wanted. Maybe do the laundry. Call your mom.

Winter fog crept in, slowly quieting the last riotous orange of autumn. The Harvest Gods took their final bow, welcoming the Yule Lads and their mischief. Seasons turned, trees began their slumber, reindeer pawed the Northern snow in anticipation.

Let it snow.

His goal was simple. Keep baking until he ran out of ingredients or he ran out of people to give stuff to. Gingerbread, cookies, breads, the odd cake, all made during the annual Holiday Baking Frenzy. His friends groaned with each new plate but loved it anyway. Bring forth the figgy pudding.

He missed the bees. They were snug in their hive, and had enough honey to feed them through the winter. Still, it would be nice to have them buzzing around the Christmas tree - he imagined them bee-dancing to carols and sneaking the figgy pudding.

God rest ye merry, Gentlebees.

This wasn't his first Noël. He could do without the angels, they scared the sheep and made the dogs' jobs harder. Claus was fine though, a good man with livestock, and the reindeer were polite to the flock. And he brought gifts for the ewes so they'd have fresh fodder for Yule. Joyeux Noël.

"What are you so afraid of?" she asked, pulling me under the mistletoe with a smile. I wanted to kiss her, but under her quirky holiday sweater and striped elf leggings was the burn of Winter, not of the Yule log. Kissing her would mean abandoning summer forever.

Maybe it was rebellion. Holly and mistletoe weren't her thing. She preferred living where the temperature was above freezing year round. But every December, she made the trip home. Mom said she was too thin, Dad made her help with the sleigh, and the elves threw a party. Holiday traditions.

"It's still tilting. I told you the stand wouldn't hold it."

We had gotten a big tree this year, full and chunky, and the old tree stand was terribly inadequate. I figured I could MacGyver something, but it was a beast.

I pulled the new stand from around the couch. "You were right, honey."

Truth is, the holiday spirit was never just about evergreens and cocoa. Krampus picked up all the ugly, neglected things from the roadside and put them up to welcome the marginal, the outsiders. It was an unconventional tree, but even the monsters celebrate. O, holy night indeed.

The office holiday party had gotten out of hand after the fourth round of Holly Jolly's. But he didn't expect this, waking up wearing only a waiter's jacket and gloves.

Why were there reindeer in the ballroom? Why did he smell like balsam?

What was in those cocktails? He blamed the elves.
