I am an evolutionary biologist devoted to herpetology. I love all kinds of vertebrates and the science of it. Nevertheless I really try to understand why so many of them share nearly convergent adaptations to live in the same biota.

Happy Caturday! Meet the rusty-spotted cat. Known as the “hummingbird of cats,” it's one of the world’s smallest felines, weighing in at ~3.5 lbs (1.6 kg). Primarily nocturnal, this cat uses its large eyes to hunt under the cover of darkness.

Tomorrow, the US Dep of Agr1culture will start purging probationary employees, including many new #entomology scientists. I’m disgusted and furious. Our labor union will explore every legal avenue. Please check in on your colleagues, they are human beings. Tomorrow will be a dark day.
Confirmation this morning: mass firings of vulnerable US government staff have begun. These people just wanted to study insects and protect our food supply. For global colleagues, there's a pool of bright, displaced #entomology talent. Let’s support each other, you have value.
As I see my colleagues at risk of job loss in the US government, I have been on the phone with people in tears over many concerns I won’t get into on this platform. I am doing my best for them behind the scenes. However, I will recall a passage from William M. Wheeler in 1970. #science #entomology

Today, the USDA lost experts in Psylloidea, Thysanoptera, Cerambycidae, Hymenoptera, Pseudococcidae, and Malacology. This is a devastating loss of expertise, occuring without warning. Their union's official statement on the issue can be found here: aginspectors.org/2-14-2025-a-... #entomology 🧪
