Magician by Raymond Feist. It was my introduction to fantasy and I still read it every year. It's a 30 book series split into self contained trilogies, though you could stop after the first book as well if you didn't really vibe with it. Can't recommend it enough!

Have you read much Matt Haig? I really enjoyed The Humans by him.
