They allow it to be procured, used, and even recently expanded within the county, including the PTZ cameras which monitor people moving about and have very Orwellian capabilities. Facial identification and AI monitoring for suspicious activity, because that cant ever be a used.

Or have we just normalized this surveillance and what’s going on with technology being abused against citizens?

Great learning event for leaders and citizens of #ArlingtonVA to learn about this controversial tech before it is further embedded in our community. @takiskarantonis.bsky.social @susanforarlington.bsky.social @jdspainsr.bsky.social @matt4arlington.bsky.social @maureencoffeyva.bsky.social

You can get more stats on your jurisdictions use by searching here: eyesonflock.com. I found a link to Arlington’s policy and it explicitly calls out PTZ technology but does not talk about specific capabilities. Interestingly it only focuses on ALPR.

If you want way more rabbit hole, this site plays off the haveibeenpwned security website and has some especially egregious documented cases, including flocks attempt to flag them as a phishing site to take them offline.

The EFF and ACLU have great resources for information on what these systems can do and the nationwide movements to purge our communities of them.

Given the #ArlingtonVa ruling class’ extreme caution around opening the door to a change of government, we should expect: a full project plan, clear and publicly measurable goals from the outset, maximum awareness of the surveillance by citizens, and healthy conversation of budget priorities/values

This technology should be disabled until the wider community can have a conversation about it, with full access to the supporting contract and audits that exist so far.

3. Audit transparency. In other jurisdictions it has taken citizens who are acutely aware of the potential abuses to FOIA the data out of the department. Arlington has a well demonstrated aversion to scaled up auditing and taking action from it, the outlook isn’t great.

As every single other industry and company is learning right now from the AI race, once your data is out there you don’t actually control it. We know flock data is not stored under direct control of the county.
December 22, 2025 at 8:13 PM
2. Where does the data reside? If it is stored outside of VA, do VA laws still govern it? How long is the data stored? The main issue here being that it can later be abused should those big brother capabilities be enabled. You can also search flocks strategy of ignoring privacy and data rights

Even if Arlington does not use these capabilities today, we are installing the hardware everywhere that will someday be abused.

Friends of mine in law enforcement have anecdotally told me about the full suite of face recognition and tracking capabilities. This is not a distant future technology.

Outstanding summary from @adamtheo.com! The biggest problems I see:
1. Legit scary surveillance tech. Conversation focuses on LPR but the PTZ cameras have far more consequential capabilities.
December 22, 2025 at 8:13 PM
Any attention we can bring to this issue would be huge for civil liberties in our community. The police dept has good intentions, with staffing issues being a huge limiter. However, solving it with surveillance technology will only grow mistrust and the potential for mishaps. #ArlingtonVa

And by AI features, I mean the worst of the worst surveillance capabilities on all the data that’s already been collected and waiting for exploitation.

It’s unfortunate but maybe not surprising that it must come to a referendum to hold the single party rulers accountable.
