I think it depends on the type of content you make/the frequency of the uploads.
If you make content that takes a lot of time to make, then I can imagine it to give you a much needed boost for the beginning- but only then.

2. The Views came suprisingly steady, but didn't lead to it gaining more views through other means; but the retention time went down from originally 50% to 6%.

I reuploaded the Video after it had 123 Views with subscriber notifacation on (forgot to make a screenshot before deleting the original, so take that with a grain of salt)
and both turned the notification option off and used the promotion function one day later.
