Now, I get it: he's more forceful than Joyce and he expresses his fear in a way that is dickish. But it's not *because* he's just a dick, it's *because* he is a Midwestern boomer who was enculturated to act like this. That's not bad writing, that's accurate writing to the time and place of the story

Also Hopper literally explains to El why he is acting the way he is and that he and his dad's relationship had a similar tone. After that discussion, El references it and Hopper even listens to her reasoning *and agrees with her plan* to do a dangerous thing. He demonstrates the same growth as joyce

As someone who had a dad kind of like this going growing up, I can tell you that this is 100% a way that men of that generation and culture expressed parental fear. I'm also literally from Indiana. He's being a dickhead *because of that parental fear*. Those are not mutually exclusive states.

Hell yeah, the Luddites deserve a lot more respect and to at least be remembered accurately for their goals.

And yet Hopper is not "every straight dude in Stranger Things" AND the character who acts must similarly is Joyce.

If they want to run mean-spirited, cruel little tables, no one is stopping them. The rest of us are gonna go have some fun gaming with our friends without clinging to every internalized piece of self-loathing we've ever experienced. It's ok, dudes, you too can be free not to be a dipshit.

98.5% of the time, reading some Pratchett is a solid jumping off point

Worth noting: JG's posted critique here isn't even accurate to the characters in question. Not to spoiler but it describes basically one dude and is more like parental fear than macho posturing. The teens/kids have a much wider variety of shit going on. It's a bad critique from the jump.

And people are allowed to be annoyed when "analysis and critique" turns into "the show is bad and I'm a smarty for saying so". This didn't invite critique, it invited smugness and scorn for liking a thing. Just check out how many responses are self pats on the back for not liking something popular.

Also new Ben Richards seemed entirely incapable of grasping the premise of the show he was on and that we knew he watched. Like every side character tells him reality TV is fake and dude still doesn't really get till the last 10 minutes.

I love the OG movie and enjoyed this one well enough. The thing that stood out to me is how much more the Schwarzenegger version leaned in on the Anarchist rebellion where this one really resisted going full on. Nods and esthetics for sure but def not a full throated endorsement.

if that's not your jam, move along.

And PS: Yes, the era is a part of the setting and yes, it does matter that dudes in the 80s (even when written by dudes 40 years later) act like dudes from the 80s. Sorry they didn't suddenly gain 40 years of cultural competency from an entirely different world.

Also, not for nothing, can we not enjoy a thing for 24 hours before we start the eye roll train? So tired of the immediate invitation to shit on a thing that others like. Yup, Stranger Things is repetitive- the writers have literally said they like writing in mirrored arcs -

I mean, we all know people who keep repeating the same patterns and none of them have the excuse of having their lives blown up roughly once a year for the past 5 years. I don't think any of them have had time for therapy, you know?

I bet scientists do not, in fact, say it's time to consider whether they're onto something.

I was just thinking I know a song about this very problem...
November 20, 2025 at 9:42 PM
I mean, that's one way to say you don't have any new material worth listening to (or old material worth listening to) /shrug

Damn, I'm just happy when I get an actual solid night's sleep. If being comfortable gives me wrinkles, bring them on baby!

Question: How upset would they be if I told them their role is to dispense animal companions with just enough challenge to feel earned?
November 15, 2025 at 9:09 PM
I'm kind of surprised you aren't already lol
November 10, 2025 at 10:25 PM
But what was the point you were making?
