For the easy numbers the bases are
I, V, X
If an I is before V or X, subtract it from the base.
For example IV
I = 1
V = 5
5-1=4
IV=4
If an I is after V or X, add it to the base.
VI=6
A more complicated one would be XXXVI
But it’s still just as simple as adding, 10+10+10+5+1=36
