Studies show that combining alcohol with cannabis is potentially harmful. Why is it so common among young adults? Depression and anxiety may be a risk factor for mixing cannabis with alcohol. Can specific reasons for combining cannabis with alcohol help us understand why this relationship occurs?

Hooshiar has presented his work at York University’s Poster Day, the 2025 Conference for Undergraduate Health Research, and the 9th Annual Research Society on Marijuana Conference, where he received the Underrepresented Student Award.

Hooshiar examined how young adults perceive stigma differently for medicinal versus recreational cannabis use, finding greater perceived disapproval for recreational use, even though comfort in disclosing either type of use was similar.

Hooshiar’s undergraduate thesis, "Medicinal Versus Recreational Cannabis Use: Examining Associations Between Indicators of Stigma, Use Behaviours, and Negative Outcomes", was completed at the BAC Lab under the supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Wardell.

Interestingly, using fewer substances was associated with a higher risk of Internet Gaming Disorder, suggesting a potential substitution effect.

Vasquez Castro's research explored how combinations of substance use relate to gaming motives such as coping, competition, and social connection, as well as to Internet Gaming Disorder.
