Associate Professor of public health at Muhlenberg College. History, ethics, epidemiology, sports, injury prevention.
I realize I don’t have the most promising senators to call, but I called and left voice messages anyway. I went a little off script by the time I got to McCormick and said I wanted to know if he actually believed in the second amendment, fourth amendment, or any of our other constitutional rights?

Round one of shoveling complete, in the warmest hat and coat I own! Sharing this message from the PA Department of Health:

Shoveling snow? Stay safe!
✅ Take it slow
✅ Push snow instead of lifting
✅ Take breaks
✅ Stay hydrated
🚨 STOP & CALL 911 if you notice any signs of a heart attack.

This is as close as I could get, but I think this is a hawk on campus @meghgrace.bsky.social

Pinsley and Siegel are also forcing Mackenzie to stake out his unpopular ICE positions publicly. I expect this will make it that much harder for him to defend his seat in this purple district. “Pinsley is one of seven Democrats vying to challenge Republican U.S. Rep Ryan Mackenzie in November.”

Very pretty snow on campus today at Muhlenberg! @muhlenbergcollege.bsky.social

Really loved this piece currently on display at the Guggenheim, and so fitting this time of year: “Breakfast of the Birds” by Gabriele Münter (1934)

More from the Wall Street Journal comments section: “So the people who accused the Dems of weaponizing the Justice Department are wait for it Weaponizing the Justice Department!
This is just shameful and Congress are you ever stepping up here?”

I certainly achieved my resolution to support live theater this past year! I am very grateful to the discounted lottery/rush ticket options that made this possible.

We saw Two Strangers (Carrying A Cake Across New York) last night. It was fun and sweet, with two excellent leads. There were multiple points where audience members in various parts of the theater led out very audible awwwws, one of which was so loud and cute it set the entire audience laughing.

It is great to see state and local leaders stepping up to communicate about public health. Here is a screen grab of Allentown mayor Matt Tuerk speaking with Erin of the Allentown Health Bureau about the importance of vaccinating children. These short videos on social media can have a real impact.

So weird! Especially because they put red meat at the very top left of their upside down pyramid… The exact place we will all look first for what to prioritize in our RFKJ and Dr. Oz approved diets, right next to the words “protein, dairy & healthy fats”

I did, however, have to leave voice messages with both senators. If you are able, please join me in contacting your representatives in whatever way you’re most comfortable with. “Congress must demand a full investigation of Kennedy’s attack on childhood vaccination access”

Taking a break from the depressing news to celebrate my recent cooking success: eggs, dill, feta cheese, rice, spinach, lemon juice, scallions, garlic and lots of black pepper.

We saw a lovely performance of the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors at Lincoln Center yesterday. Short, sweet, and lots of beautiful oboe!

An interesting possible/partial explanation for the effectiveness of variolation: “the presence of interferon in scab material that was used for variolation might have so interfered with the replication of the inoculated virus that the consequent disease was milder” @jackiantonovich.bsky.social

One thing I have learned as a public health professor is that there is real value in stating and repeating important information, even—or especially—when that information may seem like it should be obvious.

I just left voice messages with my representative and both Pennsylvania senators. “There is no congressional approval for this military action. Congress must return from recess immediately to rein in these aggressive and illegal acts of war.”

“We stand with Chuck Redd, the Cookers & many others who canceled performances there. We also strongly support the National Symphony, will badly miss its concerts & have every hope that it will outlast the sycophants…
Musicians and performers need freedom, not obeisance to power. In fact, we all do”
