As an ex-ecologist, I get a little weary of the “spoils the wilderness” arguement. Oh, you mean your view of the 1970s commercial monoculture of industrial timber production? That wilderness?

Decades later, I’m seeing serious, grown up people talking about the impact of AI, and it all feels very familiar.

Trust me, we are not heading to a new Culture-like utopia of infinite leisure time, and universal income.

The internet boom of mid to late 90s promised much the same. Didn’t happen.

The cynical amongst us argued there was no way that there would be a move towards a 2 day week: employers, faced with the ability to do things 100x faster, will simply expect 100x more work to be done as standard.

The recurring theme was that office tasks such as accounting could be done many many times faster with IT. So the big issue was going to be “what will we do with all the leisure time we will now have?”.

This from serious, grown up, intelligent people.

By the time I was finishing college, some fellow students actually had PCs at home. The rest of us used the college PCs with rudimentary word processing and spreadsheets.

At this time, the impact of PC and new technology was being discussed in many of our classes…

I feel that I am pretty much of an age with modern computers. The personal computer appeared when I was at primary school, and by the time I left secondary school, there were a handful BBC commodores, and you could choose to learn Basic.
