The male praying mantis must approach the female very cautiously and signal he is not prey in order to mate. Their pairing can last for hours. This one seems fortunate and we hope he didn’t get eaten during or after.

It’s mating season for our praying mantises…the male who has eight segments on the abdomen and longer antennae is attracted to the female who emits pheromones to attract it. She has shorter antennae and only six segments on the abdomen. This male approached the female very cautiously to mate…
