It's only safer if you have perfect form. Straight bar does a better job of encouraging good form, in my experience. Me, as myself, who is not an expert or certified personal trainer, would say it'd be net better to focus on form with an empty straight bar than get bad habits from a hex bar.

Careful with the trap bar. That design has caused a lot of back injuries.
