I am British and we have a different process to you folk.
We always have an opposition party, party leaders and opposition roles mirroring those in government (The Shadow Cabinet).
For example - an opposition Foreign Secretary.

I don't have the answers to your questions but I do think that people are looking for easy answers (a strong man to take charge) partly because they have lost faith in national politics.
