Yeah, no one is saying otherwise. The salient point is today's generation no longer believe they need to feign the humanitarian and philanthropic contributions--a seachange in attitudes from the old generation. "Should we try to buy public goodwill? Nah, let's rub their faces in it, too."

Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Rockefellers, Morgans, and others built libraries, gave historic contributions to education and the arts, and other really great things that benefitted society. They were all terrible people, but they at least understood the social contract of their wealth.
