Yeah it had the guardian system which I think was a one time payment of $20 that had a lot of content behind it, but also had like a rotating item shop that was like rng based with real money lol

From like a design standpoint yes, it’s incredibly poorly designed but man was it fun. But for example the game doesn’t track quest progress at all, u can literally pull up the list of the main story quests and skip to quest 72 without completing anything before it.

I will someday have to play Dark Souls 2 so I can give my complete thoughts on the franchise and its direction but overall it just felt like they learned so much of what plagued Dark Souls 1 for a smoother experience.

I chose to leave Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree out of the discussion as it’s MUCH larger than any of the other DLC’s.

DS1’s DLC Artorias of the Abyss I find to be the best when you compare it to what the base game had to offer. A measured improvement across the board, and DS3 DLCs just felt like more content outside of their respective boss highlights instead of an opportunity to improve on the game.

Both of the DLC’s were a bit of a mixed bag for me. Ariandel was very short, with one boss that felt way too simple and the other being one of my favorite bosses of the Soulsborne games period. Ringed city was a lot more content but had very annoying enemies and boss roster was meh aside from Gael.

I’d say my top 5 bosses were: Sister Friede, Soul of Cinder, Pontiff Sulyvhan, Nameless King, and Dancer of the Boreal Valley. All of them were appropriately difficult, fair and rewarding fights to learn from my personal experience.

Dark Souls 3 had many “multi-enemy bosses” and by far they had the best execution. Funnily enough multi-bosses consisted of some of the worst fights of ER(Godskin Duo) and DS1 (Ornstein and Smough), and conversely some of my favorites of DS3 (Abyss Watchers, Friede (phase 2), The Twin Princes).

I don’t necessarily think giving the player options is a bad thing but I personally stress too much about doing a harder boss before another because it’s not the “ideal experience”. Nothing worse than fighting a good boss while over leveled and not getting to enjoy it.

Cathedral of the Deep and Irithyll were my favorite levels, and the only one I truly hated was Irithyll Dungeon. I felt this game did a very good job of using shortcuts for progression and I enjoyed its linearity. Dark Souls 1 I oftentimes found myself having to lookup what the best order was

Comparative to Dark Souls and Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3 had my least favorite early game. High Wall Lothric being ok but Undead Settlement and Road of Sacrifices just not being fun at all. This turned around at Cathedral of the deep and there were very few misses as far as level design going forward
