By the way, what do you consider the "classic era" of Conan?
To me, classic Conan represents the whole cel era, early digital era, Mari Tominaga's era, & the switch to widescreen, ending w/ Ep 504.

Sudo coming back to the series in ep 505 sets the baseline for modern Conan, imo.

I think everyone should be able to appreciate art of the past, but I don't think it's great to use that appreciation to dismiss the art being made today. Especially in cases like Conan, where it's literally a lot of the same people, having honed their craft for years. 😅

In the end, I think a lot of it's just nostalgia for the classic era, and to an extent I get it. Detective Conan was a show born in the final years of the cel-animation era, and those first 283 episodes are really something special, a truly exemplary example of that era of anime.

It's really nuanced, because not only has Gosho Aoyama's art evolved over time, but Masatomo Sudo has also worked on refining his designs for the anime to match Gosho's ever-evolving art.

It feels really disingenuous to look at both these artists and claim they "got worse".

Anyway Detective Conan has been airing for 30 years and this work truly had the magic formula because between plot they can literally just grab Conan & a few regulars and shove them into whatever random case of the day to fill a broadcast slot.

YO TAXI BRO IS BACK NEXT WEEK?!

As we sit on the eve of One Piece concluding its run as a daytime anime, it's important to remember what those kind of shows were and what they represented. It was a time when the TV broadcast itself played a huge part in shaping those anime.

The fun thing about it is that so many different series' have different circumstances and tackle this challenge in different ways. Sometimes that was a big part of the fun in seeing things turned into anime!
Of course it didn't always work.

Hey guess what, many of the classic magical girl series' people love were like that!
Sailor Moon's anime started airing when only 3 chapters were out. 🤪 Obviously it would end up just retooling the story concepts into its own unique work!
One that needed a year's worth of eps.

Taking a show & planning it so you could have a year's worth of episodes to air was just as important as the adaptation itself, and sometimes if you only had like a couple of chapters you're in the position of "Uhh... how do I take this tiny amount of content and plan 50 eps?"

Posts here don't have nearly enough space to explain this point well, but like, listen guys, BACK IN MY DAY the difference between daytime anime and late night anime was categorically staggering, and I feel like English-speaking fans don't fully understand that.

Today's special was so good! The remade OP & ED and the sponsor card segments with Gosho & the seiyuu's fav songs got me feelin' feels! 😭

Those are just things that they had to work around to make work in an English dub regardless.

But putting that aside, yes it's hard to gauge how long we'll keep getting more episodes dubbed like this. I can only hope they keep at it for as long as possible. 🙏
