Lol I haven’t disagreed with you, I’ve said twice that the amount they have arrived at is too high. I agree the parameters / definitions in this example look to be hogwash.

I’m saying that using AN absolute measure (arrived at properly) is a valid thing to do. These people have not done that.

I agree that the number they arrived at could be too high - I really don’t know how far $130k would get you in the US.

The article doesn’t define basic needs, may have included all sorts crap to arrive at that value.

This doesn’t mean a sensible estimate couldn’t be arrived at using absolute.

The amount may be too big (I don’t know how much that amount buys in US), but I think the concept of redrawing it based on an absolute measure is sound.

Should really be used together - absolute indicating a society’s ability to meet basic needs, relative indicating inequalities within a society.

I don’t understand why not. I read the article as proposing the $36k poverty line (which may well relate to relative poverty) is an unsuitable poverty measure and that an absolute measure (which they have proposed as over $100k) is a better reflection.

Soz, I sound facetious but not trying to be.

There are 2 kinds of poverty - relative and absolute. For example, if 90% of a population can’t afford basics such as food, water, shelter, heat etc (e.g. a society where all of the wealth is tied up in a handful of individuals) then there would be a high rate of absolute poverty.

I’ve re-read the Discworld series start to finish 4 times up to now. Each time I still discover new references and nuggets that I only get because I’ve lived a few more years since the last read.

RIP the greatest

You can tell they know they are producing this to mislead readers by the fact they always say ‘x sacked AFTER saying y’ rather than ‘x sacked FOR saying y’. They know it’s isn’t the reason they were sacked but try and insinuate that it is anyway.

Can they even do that? Given everyone adheres to SNA?

I mean I suppose they can do what they like but it will make thing incomparable with, we’ll, everyone.

Although that’s probably the point of excluding it

What are the other methods for getting into the UK? I’d assume an asylum seeker couldn’t get on a plane or ferry, for example, without prior permission. I’m just wondering how else non-small-boat arrivals actually get here?
