That's all written about the batting, but it sort of applies to the bowling too. I think the bowling generally is in a better state, but we have seen a lack of refinement there as well in this series.

It's going to require unprofitable commitment from the ECB, which they don't do well. The fundamentals have been neglected for a decade or more and it's going to take a lot to fix. It doesn't mean England can't win in the meantime! Just there has to be a long-term approach underneath the immediate.

There has to be some sort of incentive to learn to bat for long periods of time, to withstand periods of tough bowling, and to convert starts into big scores. It doesn't have to be slow, dour batting, but there does need to be enough technique to be reliable.

Maybe that wouldn't work. There are issues with the Championship that go beyond what the ECB can fix, and maybe it's just never going to be a high enough standard of competition to reliably develop talent by itself. But something needs to happen to better refine and hone natural talent.

But I do also think we should be asking prospective batsmen to consistently score runs in the Championship before being called up to the England side. Right now it feels like players are being selected on style and scouting and then developed by the national academy system or by the England Lions.

There is certainly no uncontroversial fix. I would like to see the Championship placed more prominently in the summer, but that's not an unbiased opinion; I think it should happen just on principle.

England have not developed batting talent in years; it's been a problem going way back before Bazball. It's the root of a lot of England's inconsistency for the last decade or so. This is related to the seemingly endless debate over the County Championship, and I don't think there is a simple fix.
