I get that point, and we do need to protect the players. But many of football greatest moments happened in extra time, and it has been a part of the sport for so long now that is to be expected of players to be able to handle it.

I completely disagree, to be honest. Extra time is some of the most exciting football. Nerves are at an absolute max, and even the smallest mistake could mean game over. Just in recent years, we have had a World Cup final where two goals were scored in extra time. I personally love it.
