Seen some question the “primarily.” In NYC, that was the case. As of June 2024, 79% of the growth in population in shelters since 2022 was due to migrants, thanks in part to NYC’s right to shelter, according to the Department of Homeless Services.

It actually technically doesn’t mean majority, but plurality in this context, but that’s mostly irrelevant. And it is the largest single driver. That there are other issues doesn’t change that this one exists, or that it matters. It also *doesn’t mean* that other issues don’t matter.

So yes; the spike in homelessness in the last few years was empirically contributed to by a rise in brand new arrivals with literally no place to go.
Nearly all remained in shelters for a few months before scrounging up work/funds to rent a room somewhere. Some ended up long-term homeless, though.

Yes, it’s entirely true that many of the migrants who came under the Biden admin did not have housing arranged for them when they arrived and so ended up in homeless shelters at first, at times for months, while they got on their feet. This is 100% true, not an anti-immigrant gotcha, just the facts.
The faction of the the left that lives for harassment is just slamming Matt for this, but he’s correct and this has been considered for years a major cause of the recent homelessness spike. Watching people maliciously misread his very short tweet and call him a “Nazi” is something else.
