A poor article in a poorly managed journal.

#Criminology doesn’t need lab-made “precision" because crime is historically contingent, institutionally produced, and power-saturated.

Branding critical criminology “unscientific” only shields institutional injustice.

Money in the bank: progressive problem shifts in criminological science - Theory and Society
Criminology struggles to achieve progressive problem shifts, or cumulative theoretical development common in fields like physics and biology. This stems from a precision crisis characterized by a tendency to accept imprecise descriptions, vague theoretical predictions, and analytical practices that obscure data. Drawing on Meehl’s framework for assessing scientific progress in psychology, we argue criminological knowledge risks resembling “Monopoly money in the bank” rather than genuine scientific currency. We propose fundamental shifts: prioritizing precise description of concrete phenomena, subjecting theories to severe tests of risky predictions about explanatory mechanisms, generating more high-resolution data, and developing formal computational models of theories. While academic incentives are a significant barrier, we also explore arguments that these incentives may reflect deeper disciplinary orientations that favor broader narratives over precise, falsifiable knowledge. The path toward cumulative theoretical development in criminology involves developing approaches that precisely capture complexity while yielding falsifiable knowledge, rather than accepting lower standards.

The Trump administration's latest attack on universities involves coercing them into signing ideological pledges in exchange for funding preference. Earlier we wrote about why there's no negotiating with an annihilation attempt, universities standing firm against attacks is the only option.

A Pride flag is a symbol of love and resilience after centuries of oppression.

Is the power of FBI so brittle that a rainbow scares them? They claim strength, but fire people for symbols of dignity.

If a symbol of dignity terrifies them, their power is nothing but fear and bigotry.

The Trump admin’s offer to give preferential treatment to institutions that toe the party line reeks of bribery in exchange for allegiance to a partisan ideological agenda.

This is corruption.

Adherence to ‘loyalty oaths’ would usher in a new era of thought policing in American higher education.

When judges bless the erasure of queer books, libraries become propaganda arms of the state.

Authoritarianism seeps in through courts, schools, univs. and libraries. Today it’s And Tango Makes Three; tomorrow it will be every book questioning power.

It might be worth checking with OSF again as they may offer renewed support if the impact of earlier funding is mentioned and why continued backing is critical now. Wishing success in securing the next stage of support.

Sorry to hear this, Mary. @bordercrim.bsky.social has done such important work. It may be worth approaching the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, or the Digital Freedom Fund. Fingers crossed!

I enter Rosh Hashanah with a heavy heart. I believe in Palestinian freedom and dignity, yet watching children and families buried under rubble is unbearable. Justice can’t be built on mass graves. This new year must begin with life, not endless death.

An #executiveorder that might as well be stamped:
