She was a lovely lady. A widow. Although she had retired as a farmer, she had an enormous vegetable plot and even though she was elderly, she would be tending it all day! Weeding, digging, planting, picking. She taught me to make jam and supplied us with green beans and tomatoes. Miss her!

I did A level French and learnt a lot more when we had the house in France. We were in the sticks and very few people spoke English. I used to practice speaking Frenchwith the elderly farmer next door for hours!

I think its great to learn a new language. Im an ok-ish French speaker. Nowhere near fluent, but can hold my own (even if my grammar is awful!) My son is learning Italian in other ways now (via friends in Milan and his love of European rap music, particularly Italian).

My son started learning Italian on Duolingo. He got fed up in the end with being taught to say, "The boy writes in the sugar." 🤣🤣🤣(Reminiscent of "La plume de ma Tante." Totally useless phrase!)

Its an interesting one, isn't it? I grew up in St John's Wood but have lived in Surrey since i got married (when i was 21). I enjoy visiting London but prefer living here. Horses for courses, and all that. There's loads to love about living in London, so im sure the naysayers can be quietened!!
