Earlier in October we had a very popular Nature Art Workshop on the Common. We created ephemeral works of art using found natural materials, inspired by the principles and artworks of James Brunt. Participants young and old created wonderful collaborative and individual pieces.

Our October Yaffles Family Nature Club was also planned around the theme of autumn leaves, the children were assembling and displaying their best finds on a fallen tree trunk and arranging them on small pieces of card. Our next Yaffles session will be on the 15th of November (£2/child, adults free).

Take a closer look at an oak tree on the Common, and there is a chance you’ll find some unusual looking things on it. Plant galls are abnormal growths, usually caused by parasitic insects, mites or fungi that use them for food and protection.
October 21, 2025 at 3:48 PM
Autumn is the perfect time to go hunting for plant galls, these odd-looking growths on trees and herbaceous plants. Oak trees are famous for supporting a great amount of species and gall-causing organisms are no exception: they are hosts to more than 50 different galls.
