Yeah, agreed. Just got touchy on calling him an addict, and 'substance abuse' specifically refers to hard drug use (meth, heroin, etc). Other than that, yeah, that boy needs therapy

An addictive personality =/= an addict. Besides the obvious negative connotation, addiction can manifest in many ways: drugs, sex, gambling, alcohol exercise, dieting ...tea? I guess? Def doesn't treat underlying issues, but at least it isn't a beeline for cirrhosis. Therapy is the next step.

I heard a disheartening theory that the Black Plague selectively reduced the number of 'good' clergy, the ones who would go and tend the sick/dying with prayer/last rites etc, and preserved the 'bad' ones who stayed locked away in the abbey to avoid getting sick. It's been downhill ever since tbh

There's something to be said about the sects of evangelical Christians who really lean into the "it's not a religion, it's a relationship" because of this shtick. Also probably some use it to justify outright NOT using the Bible or Christian writings whatsoever, so, double-edged sword...
