I am glad you got me to play Silent Hill 1, it really did give me a lot of context for the series and now I understand all of these criticisms a lot better. The biggest shame was that the gameplay suffered from 3 and 4 and then they just mostly abandoned story elements for semi-generic spoopy

Nightfiend has my vote, always more to explore about mandrakes and the strange connection to darkness alongside their way of being/needing to be contracted. A very interesting little piece of the Dark Eldar that much like the models need to be explored

There's also the use of natural light that comes from the lack of wide spread electricity and the expense of lightbulbs and their filaments. Powerful enough lightbulbs were hard to come by/far more power hungry so many large places had to eschew them.
